The moms that make up Our Village at FIT4MOM Richland are some of the most inspiring and encouraging women you could want to meet! Mandy and I met at our kiddos’ gymnastics class. Her energetic son, my temperamental toddler, and my preschooler bounced around in the Tumbleroos class. On top of chasing her eldest son Aaron, Mandy was also very pregnant with baby number 2! While my eldest daughter decided gymnastics wasn’t her jam, we took a hiatus from class and the next time I saw Mandy was at the park with a fresh baby in her arms! A few months later I opened FIT4MOM Richland and Mandy was one of our founding moms and has been a pillar of Our Village ever since!
Meet Mandy Reed!
Who are the members of Mandy’s family?
Husband Garth, Son Aaron (4 years old), Daughter Emmy (9 months old)
Where did you grow up?
Denver, Colorado and St Louis, Missouri
What was your childhood ambition?
I wanted to be an author. I was in love with fiction and would make up my own fairy tales and record them on tape!
What is the furthest you have been away from home?
France on a European excursion (before children) with my husband. I also went on a field trip for marine biology in high school to the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean!
Before you became a Mommy, what kept your days busy?
I was an Engineer for the Department of Energy at the shipyards in Bremerton working on submarines and aircraft carriers. I was also a catering manager for a short period of time at Olympic College.
What does motherhood mean to you?
Motherhood is a rollercoaster of joys and challenges. It’s messy! I wasn’t really prepared for how messy it can be, but it’s a beautiful mess!
Why did you join Stroller Strides?
I wanted to get my fitness back after Emmy was born. I had worked hard to stay in shape before I had Aaron, but after he was born I became lax about it. I started running to keep up with him, but was looking for something that could work with my demands of motherhood. I love that even if I have to stop to comfort Emmy or to nurse I can still hop right back into the workout.
What is your favorite exercise?
Burpees! Just kidding! Squats are fun! They make my legs feel strong!
What hobbies/activities (aside from chasing 2 kiddos!) keep you busy and entertained?
Knitting, reading and baking! I like to experiment in the kitchen! Sometimes the results are good, sometimes they aren’t. Garth really likes pumpkin so I like trying new recipes with that.
What is your proudest moment?
Graduating with my degree in Engineering & becoming a mommy for the first time with Aaron and again with Emmy.
On April 9th, you will be participating in the Walk MS: Tri-Cities 2016 event. Why is this event significant to you and your family?
In 2007 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. My neurologist had told me about the National MS Society and I had found it to be a great resource of information. When I moved here to the Tri-Cities I didn’t know anyone but found a network of support in the local chapter. The Walk MS event raises significant funds for outreach programs and research with 80% of donated money going directly to these purposes. Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system affecting people differently. I walk for those who can’t.
*Our Village at FIT4MOM Richland will be supporting Mandy and her family’s team at the Walk MS: Tri-Cities Event on April 9th at Columbia Park in Kennewick. If you would like to join us or make a donation for the cause please visit the team page here for more information:
